WHAT IS AN EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE
An external hard drive is a type of storage device that can store digitally encoded data. They are generally non volatile storage device. The encoded data is stored on magnetic surfaces. These surfaces are in the shape of rotating platters. Drive basically means a mechanical device which is motorized. It is different from the medium with which it is being used.
They form two separate parts which mostly can be separated from each other for example, a floppy and its floppy drive. Here the floppy drive refers to the mechanical part into which a floppy is to be inserted. It is present in the processor of the computer. Initially external hard disks had removable media but nowadays with the development in technology data is completely sealed within the disks. They are a sealed unit with fixed media.
External hard disk drive stores data by using the magnetizing properties of ferromagnetic material. It works directionally. In one particular direction it is considered to be 0 and in another direction it is considered to be binary digit 1. They can read the data again and again by detecting the magnetization of the used material. The most common disks are flat circular disks. They are also called as platters and they are held by a spindle and data is recorded onto them. The platters are made of non magnetic materials such as glass or aluminum alloy and they are coated with a thin layer of magnetic material. These external hard drives are very useful to store volatile information.

Which Processor + Hard Drive Deal is Better?
I'm Looking at 2 PCs at the same price and same specs except for:
AMD Phenom X4 9750 2.4GHz quad-core with 320gb hard drive or Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 3.0GHz dual-core 1333MHz FSB 45nm with a 500gb hard drive.
I'm going to be using this PC for gaming and will need a lot of hard drive space for games, but i can just add a second hard drive 160gb from my old computer to either deal. Which one should i take? My friend strongly urges me to pick an intel processor for better quality and performance, but the AMD is quad core, will i experience any difficulties with AMD? Is there much difference?
Quad-core is not really being used to its full potential when gaming or using graphic intensive programs. The cores allowed to operate in applications are limited to two. That means when gaming only two of the foue cores of the AMD chip will allowed to be processing. The Intel chip is two cores but at a faster processing rate, the Intel chip will be faster not only due to its extremely high 3.0Ghz speed but its FSB and the size of the chip which is 45nm.
Go with the Intel chip.
